     Tootsie

In the 1950’s the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a battle to win the hearts and minds of the diverse peoples of Central and Eastern Europe. Democracy and Communism were in a silent war with each other. The space, technology, and arms race with each other was growing into a crescendo. It seemed to all the world, that an all-out war between nations was inevitable.

In 1961 it culminated in a massive military build-up in Eastern Germany by the Soviet Union, resulting in the separation of the city of Berlin and the Berlin Wall being constructed by the Soviets.

The year is 1962, and a proud, young Soviet Army soldier from the 151st Division in Kiev is called up to service, to journey and help in the Soviet security in East Germany. Along with him traveled a brand new KMZ-MB750 motorcycle and sidecar. The soldier and his motorcycle servered their entire military career in East Germany, until, in 1989 the Berlin Wall is demolished, and the once proud, young soldier and his once beautiful new motorcycle were finally brought back home to Kiev. The motorcycle was purchased from the military by the soldier, who finally allowed her to rest and serve out the rest of her existence in peace. He had named her “Tootsie”.

When we found her, she was covered with dust and cobwebs in the corner of our retired soldier’s garage. We purchased her on site and transported her to our mechanic, Pasha. Pasha completely disassembled her, and set about the task of giving her new life.

The frame has been stripped and powder-coated. All body parts were stripped and repainted the exact military color, and the entire drivetrain has been restored. Our Pasha, who is as much artist as he is mechanic, works in a tiny garage, and he has let no other human being help him in the restoration process. He has renamed her with the name of “Legionaire”, and has insisted that he will conduct the brake-in process himself, trusting no one else. He has given her as much love, as he has given her his mechanical knowledge and skill. Pasha has also re-numbered her with the non-existent 152nd Division, as a symbol of peace, for himself, for his beloved Ukraine, and for his resurrected “Legionnaire”.
